What is Second Step?Children need social and emotional skills to thrive in both the classroom and in life. Second Step is a teacher-led social/emotional learning program that teaches children skills such as how to gain confidence, set goals, make decisions, and get along with others. The Second Step curriculum provides teachers with an easy-to-use, engaging way to teach social-emotional concepts on a regular basis.

What do Students Learn? The Second Step curriculum is organized to teach children age-appropriate SEL lessons that build upon one another each year. Students receive a weekly lesson, and lessons are organized into 4 units that will be covered during the school year. These units include (1) Growth Mindset and Goal-Setting, (2) Emotion Management, (3) Empathy and Kindness, and (4) Problem-Solving.

How Can Parents Get Involved? Our goal in implementing a school-wide, teacher-led SEL program is to help students thrive in all areas of their lives (including at home!) You can encourage your child's social/emotional learning by asking them about the counselor theme-of-the-month and their Second Step classroom lessons. Check out my monthly newsletters under the "monthly theme" tab above for specific ideas on how to teach social/emotional skills at home.
